Heli.life, a site devoted entirely to heli-skiing, took a hard look at Valdez Heli-Ski Guides. Their verdict opens with the history: VHSG has been flying, scouting and skiing Alaska’s Chugach Range for over 30 years. Founded by extreme-skiing legend Doug Coombs, this Valdez-based operator traces its roots to the very beginning of heli-skiing in Alaska - and few operators, they write, are as respected or as experienced.
Valdez: the name says it all
Valdez is synonymous with Alaskan heli-skiing, and VHSG is as original an operation as you will find. Based at the historic Tsaina Lodge in the heart of Thompson Pass, it offers unrivaled access to the best terrain the Chugach has to offer.
Getting here is easier than you think
Some heli operations demand serious choreography to reach - multiple transport modes, multi-day travel plans, narrow windows to pull it off. Heli.life is emphatic that VHSG is not that operation. You fly in and out of Valdez Airport (VDZ), where West Coast flights are frequent and affordable, so most guests arrive with one connection at most. Ground transportation between the airport and the lodge is included. As they put it: when it comes to heli-ski trips, it does not get much easier.
The Tsaina Lodge
From humble roots as an oil-trucker roadhouse to its status as the place to be for big-mountain skiers, the Tsaina has never lost its wild streak. Fully renovated and offering downright luxurious accommodation, it remains the epicenter where adrenaline junkies mingle - with a legendary bar hosting apres parties open to the public.
But this is no party hostel, they note. Private suites and rooms with Tempur-Pedic beds ensure restful nights, while a cigar room with fireplace, a large hot tub, a massage room and an outdoor fire pit allow for a mellower register when you want it. The Tsaina can be as raucous or as relaxed as you make it - a rare combination among heli-ski lodges.
Hobbs hours, and how flight time works
Heli.life explains the metric that matters. Flight time is tracked in Hobbs hours - "power on" flight time, as opposed to idling - and it is the standard by which every Alaskan heli operator pays for its machines. That is why our memberships are defined by Hobbs hours rather than vague promises of runs.
Groups of four, a 4:1 ratio
With a maximum of 24 guests at the Tsaina Lodge in any given week, VHSG keeps a close-knit feel whether you fly solo or arrive with a crew. Skiing happens in groups of four, giving an outstanding 4:1 guest-to-guide ratio - and a genuinely personalized experience in the mountains.
Truly all-inclusive
Whichever membership you book, the offering is all-inclusive: seven nights at the lodge, all meals, all required backcountry safety gear, demo skis or snowboards, daily laundry service, and transportation to and from Valdez Airport. In their words, you could show up with a single change of clothes and not think twice about it all week.
The private week
There is nothing wrong with strangers - but sometimes you simply want to maximize time skiing and hanging with your own people. Heli.life rates VHSG among the best operators for private groups: a private helicopter for your crew alone, especially popular with families and with hard-charging skiers hunting bigger, badder lines. A guaranteed once-in-a-lifetime experience.
A place unlike any other
It is hard to describe the vibe at the Tsaina, they admit. Modern and luxurious in all the right ways, it somehow keeps its old-school, wild-west feel - a true locals’ hangout whose restaurant and bar keep post-ski energy high, striking the balance between real skier’s haunt and swanky alpine getaway.
Few ski lodges carry as much bona fide skier credibility. This is the business that launched the first World Extreme Skiing Championship in 1991, and it has been a clubhouse for the world’s best skiers ever since. No surprise that Doug Coombs - World Extreme Skiing Champion and VHSG’s founder - chose to base his operation at this epicenter of Alaskan skiing. That history can still be felt in its core.
